Colonel Lawrence (Larry) Conques (deceased)
Larry arrived in Fontainebleau at the very beginning of AAFCE in November 1951, soon to become a new Lieutenant Colonel, and was assigned as Executive Officer to the HQ Commandant (General Pierre Fay). Among his senior colleagues was the Commander, General Norstad, and Colonel Lindsey, Base Commander. Larry left AAFCE in October, 1953, for an assignment in the States.
He held the following key appointments before retiring as a full Colonel:
Secretary on the Philippines-US Mutual Defense Board (1963 – 64)
Chief Congressional Inquiry Division, Office of Secretary of the AF (1964 – 69)
Assistant Chief of Staff, HQ United States Air Forces in Europe (1969 – 72)
After his military service, Larry was Director of Public Safety, Charleston, W. Virginia (1974 – 80).
Larry had three children, Duane, Deborah, and Anthony (Tony), from his first marriage to Irene Ingersoll of Oklahoma. The marriage was dissolved in 1968. The same year, he married Ashton Cotton Gallagher from West Virginia, who was personal secretary to Hubert Humphrey, the Vice President. (Both wives have predeceased him.)
(Duane also served in the Air Force, retiring as a full Colonel in the Regular Air Force. He was once the senior personnel manager of the year in Europe and served as the Air Force Reserve Chief of Personnel in the Pentagon. Duane’s brother, Tony, a civil servant, now supervises the Real Estate Portfolio Management Division in the Pentagon.
